Playable tech showcase for Source engine
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is a free-to-play action experience from Valve, originally intended as a part of the classic first-person shooter game, Half-Life 2. It was made available for players to experience the capabilities of High Dynamic Range (HDR) lighting to the Source engine. Although short, it’s a playable stage with a clear mission.

Experience a lost stage with new tech
At the time of its release, Half-Life 2 was already considered revolutionary. However, to help players better appreciate the HDR technology, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast was released. It was originally planned as a part of the Highway 17 portion of HL2. After being cut out of the game, it was repackaged to exhibit HDR instead.
As a playable chapter, you control Gordon Freeman as he tries to recapture a monastery used by the Combine alien empire to launch artillery against a small coastal town. While the gameplay premise looks straightforward, it does end on a fun note with a twist, which makes it a disappointment not to be a part of the game. The only catch is its short playthrough.
A fun tech exhibit
Aside from doing its job of exhibiting HDR tech, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is a fun lost level that will definitely cater to fans of Half-Life 2. If you missed it during its original release, this is your opportunity to enjoy improved lighting as well as a playable mission that could’ve worked well as a part of the original campaign.
